Many business owners who purchase premade Wordpress themes think that they’ll be able to customize them easily. Often they contact me when they realize it’s not as simple as they thought. If you’re in this boat, don’t worry – I’m here to help. In this blog post, I’ll discuss the best approach for getting your website up and running in a way that meets your business goals.
Here is how this conversation typically goes…
Client: I bought a theme to customize for my website, but I’m having trouble with it. Can you help me?
You: Of course, I’d be happy to help! When it comes to building a website, it’s kind of like building a house. You can either start from scratch and design a completely new house, or you can work with an existing house that you bought but isn’t quite what you wanted.
Client: Okay, I see where you’re going with this.
You: So, if we start from scratch and build a website from the ground up, we’ll be able to create something that meets all of your needs and is optimized for performance. This will take more time and money, but you’ll end up with a website that is tailored specifically to your business.
Client: That sounds good, but what if we want to save time and money?
You: Well, if we work with the existing theme you bought, we may be able to save some time and money, but we’ll have to work around its limitations. It’s kind of like buying an existing house and making changes to it. We might need to make some compromises on certain features or accept a website that isn’t as optimized as it could be.
Client: I see. So, what are my options?
You: There are two options. Option A is to start from scratch and build a website that meets all of your needs, but this will take a little more time and will cost a bit more. Option B is to work with the existing theme and customize it, but there may be some limitations and compromises that need to be made.
Option A typically involves a fixed scope and fixed price, as we work together to create the right foundation for future changes and enhancements. With Option A, you’ll get the benefit of having a website that is optimized for performance and user experience, and that fully meets your unique business goals. With this option, we need to chat about your requirements, and your goals for the website, so there is a little bit of prep work to be done before the scope and price is finalized
Option B, on the other hand, involves pay-as-you-go hourly billing. This option allows for greater flexibility, as you only pay for the work that is actually done. However, I can only give a rough estimate for the number of hours required, as requirements may not be entirely clear at the outset. Additionally, if heavy customization is required, Option B could end up costing more than Option A in the long run. It’s important to carefully consider your business needs and budget when deciding which option is right for you. With this option, we can get started a little quicker but poor or no planning can lead to headaches later.
